Canada’s Math Score a Cause for Concern

The global test scores released by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) this week indicate that when it comes to math, the world is catching up on us. The PISA (Program for International Assessment) results showed Canada ranking in tenth place among 70 countries in math skills, down from seventh place in 2006.

2010 CMS G. de B. Robinson Award Winners

The CMS is pleased to announce that Andrew Toms (Purdue University) and Wilhelm Winter (University of Nottingham) are the winners of the 2010 G. de B. Robinson Award. The G. de B. Robinson Award was inaugurated to recognize the publication of excellent papers in the Canadian Journal of Mathematics and the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin and to encourage the submission of the highest quality papers to these journals.

Benjamin Young to Receive CMS 2010 Doctoral Prize

The CMS is pleased to announce that Benjamin Young is the recipient of the 2010 Doctoral Prize. The CMS Doctoral Prize recognizes outstanding performance by a doctoral student. Young will receive his award and present a plenary lecture at the 2010 CMS Winter Meeting in Vancouver.

Math Team Canada brings home Gold

A team of six Canadian high school students have placed 13th overall at the 51st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Astana, Kazakhstan from July 5 to July 14. The team competed against students from 96 other countries and was awarded two gold, one silver and two bronze medals, and one honourable mention.

Thousands participate in Canada's national student math challenge

In November 2009, 8,400 students from across Canada and abroad competed for top honours in the 2009 Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC). Nine students earned top honours, sixteen students were named provincial winners, and almost 140 other students were awarded medals.

Canadian Team selected for the 51st International Mathematical Olympiad

The CMS, with the support of the Imperial Oil Foundation and other corporate and provincial sponsors, has chosen six of Canada’s brightest and best math students to represent Canada at the 51st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), being held this year in Astana, Kazakhstan from July 2 to July 14. The IMO is the student world championship of mathematics.

The CMS is pleased to announce that Bálint Virág from the University of Toronto is the recipient of the 2010 Coxeter-James Prize. The prize was inaugurated in 1978 to recognize young mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research.

Canadian Math Students Win Olympiad Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals

In competition with students from 103 other countries, a team of six Canadian high school students performed exceptionally well, winning one gold, three silver and two bronze medals, at the 50th International Mathematical Olympiad held recently in Bremen, Germany. The strong performance gave Canada an overall 18th place finish and the highest overall student performance in over fifteen years.
