Sun Life Financial   MEDIA RELEASE
October 23, 2007

Ottawa, ON (October 23, 2007) - The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) and Sun Life Financial (TSX, NYSE: SLF), a leading international financial services organization, announced today that Sun Life has agreed to become the Title Sponsor of the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC).

The COMC, started in 1996, is an annual competition for high school students. This year's COMC will take place on November 21, 2007. In 2006, more than 7,300 students from over 500 schools participated. The COMC is for senior level students and motivates younger students who are looking for a mathematics enrichment challenge. The competition provides training and encouragement for students across Canada. The top students from the COMC are invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). The six students who represent Canada at the annual International Mathematical Olympiad are selected on the basis of their results in the CMO and other national and international mathematics competitions.

"Sun Life Financial is pleased to be the title sponsor of the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge," said Dikran Ohannessian, Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, Sun Life Financial Canada. "Mathematics is a critical discipline in Sun Life's business; from actuarial sciences to risk management, it is at the core of many critical functions. As such, our relationship with the CMS is important to Sun Life Financial, and we look forward to supporting Canada's future mathematicians through this competition."

"The CMS is delighted to strengthen our close relationship with SLF who have been a most valued supporter of the Society for more than 60 years - almost since the establishment of the CMS in 1945," said Dr. Thomas Salisbury, CMS President. "We greatly appreciate SLF's participation and support of our education and competitions programs."
