The David Borwein Distinguished Career Award was created in 2004 to recognize individuals who have made exceptional, broad, and continued contributions to Canadian mathematics. The first award was presented in 2006.

The Award

The David Borwein Distinguished Career Award is a bronze sculpture created by artist Helaman Ferguson . The sculpture is based on Benson’s formula for Madelung’s constant for NaCl (Mathematics of Salt) and reflects David Borwein’s love and appreciation of mathematics in general and classical analysis in particular.

David Borwein

David Borwein served as president of the CMS from 1985-1987. He was head of the mathematics department at the University of Western Ontario from 1967 to 1989. He has published over 125 papers and remains actively involved in research. His contributions to Canadian mathematics are extensive and include acting as a referee for a number of mathematical journals, serving as a reviewer for NSERC and NSF proposals, and being actively involved in the committees and programs of the Canadian Mathematical Society.
