OTTAWA – The Canadian Mathematical Society is pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph Khoury (Ottawa) is named the 2017 recipient of the Graham Wright Award for Distinguished Service. Dr. Khoury will be presented the award at the CMS Winter meeting in Waterloo, December 8-11, 2017.

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is again conducting its championship contest, Who Wants to Be a Mathematician, for high school students in the US, Canada, and UK with a top prize of US$5,000 for the winning student and US$5,000 for the math department of that student’s school. There is no fee to participate

The Canadian Mathematical Society is pleased to announce that Richard Hoshino (Quest) is the recipient of the 2017 Adrien Pouliot Award for significant and sustained contributions to mathematics education in Canada.

The Canadian Mathematical Society is pleased to announce that Dr. Alan Beardon has been named the recipient of the 2017 G. de B. Robinson Award for his paper on Non-discrete frieze groups published in the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin (Canad. Math. Bull. 59 (2016), 234-243). 

Professor Bernard Hodgson (Université Laval) has been named the recipient of the 2017 CMS Excellence in Teaching Award. Hodgson will receive the award and present a prize lecture at the CMS Winter Meeting in Waterloo, Ontario, December 2017.

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Canada’s six top math students are on their way to compete at the 58^th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Rio de Janeiro July 12 – 23, 2017.The six students were chosen by the Canadian Mathematical Society IMO committee, largely based on the results of the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (November 2016) and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (March 2017).

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Professor Sabin Cautis (University of British Columbia), an internationally recognized researcher and an expert in geometric representation theory and categorification, has been named the recipient of the 2017 CMS Coxeter-James Prize for his outstanding contributions to mathematical research. 

Cautis will receive his award and present a lecture at the CMS Winter Meeting in Waterloo, Ontario, December 8-11, 2017.

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Professor Stephanie van Willigenburg (University of British Columbia) has been named the recipient of the 2017 CMS Krieger-Nelson Prize for her exceptional contributions to mathematical research.

Prof. van Willigenburg will present a lecture and receive her award in conjunction with the Mathematical Congress of the Americas in Montreal in July 2017.

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Professor Robert McCann (University of Toronto) has been named the recipient of the 2017 CMS Jeffery-Williams Prize for his exceptional contributions to mathematical research. 

McCann will receive his award and present a lecture at the beginning of the Mathematical Congress of the Americas in July 2017.

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Louigi Addario-Berry and Eyal Goren of McGill University have been appointed as the incoming Editors-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Mathematics (CJM).

Three students have tied for top national honours after competing with 6,550 students across the world in Canada’s premiere national mathematics competition on November 3, 2016.

Thomas Guo (Olympiads School, North York, Ont.), Rui Ming Xiong (Western Canada H.S., Calgary, Alta.) and Daniel Zhou (Centennial Collegiate, Saskatoon, Sask.) have been recognized as the top Canadian students in the 21st annual Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) sponsored by Sun Life Financial.
