Séminaire de Mathématiques Supérieures (SMS) (Dec 6)
The CMS is proud to support the Séminaire de Mathématiques Supérieures (SMS), an annual summer school in pure and applied mathematics that takes place on the campus of the University of Montreal. The theme of the 2012 school is Probabilistic Combinatorics. The deadline for student applications is March 1, 2012.

No Signficant Difference Between Boys and Girls in Grade 8 Math Skills (Nov 28)
A new report from the Council of Ministers of Education in Canada suggests there is no significant difference between male and female students in Grade 8 when it comes to math scores. The report also found that most students performed at the expected level of achievement in math.
2011 G. de B. Robinson Award Recipients (Oct 28)
The CMS is pleased to announce that Hugh Thomas (UNB) and Alexander Yong (Illinois - Urbana-Champaign) are the recipients of the 2011 G. de B. Robinson Award for their paper "Multiplicity-Free Schubert Calculus."  The award recognizes the publication of excellent papers in CJM and CMB.
CMS Member Nominated for Prestigious Award (Oct 19)
CMS member Jason Brown (Dalhousie University) is a finalist for a 2011 Discovery Award, granted by the Nova Scotia Discovery Centre. The Discovery Awards celebrate Nova Scotia's science and technology leaders. The awards gala will be held on November 17th.
PIMS Announces Memorial Lecture Series (Oct 14)
The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) has announced the PIMS Marsden Memorial Lecture Series in honour of Jerrold Marsden (1942-2010), a world-renowned Canadian applied mathematician. Jerrold was the recipient of the 1981 CMS Jeffery-Williams Prize.

New National High School Math Competition Partnership Expands (Sep 26)
The Canadian Mathematical Society has added two new partners, University of Ottawa and Carleton University, to a unique partnership with the University of Toronto and Université Laval to stage the 2011 Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC).
Frontier Centre study on math in Canadian public schools (Sep 22)
A study released by the Frontier Centre for Public Policy concludes that Canada's public schools are largely failing to teach students basic math skills. The study quotes from Pengfei Guan's article "Mathematics Education in Elementary and Secondary Schools" (CMS Notes 42:3, 2010).
Lower CMS Membership Fees for 2012 (Sep 21)
The CMS has introduced new low cost membership categories and lowered regular membership fees for individuals for 2012. The lower cost membership fees were largely made possible by moving to an electronic distribution for CMS Notes for which a print subscription will continue to be available. At the same time, the low-cost fees for student and retired or unemployed members have been maintained.
2011 Graham Wright Award for Distinguished Service Recipient (Sep 20)
The CMS is pleased to announce that David Rodgers is the recipient of the 2011 Graham Wright Award for Distinguished Service. The award recognizes individuals who have made sustained and significant contributions to the Canadian mathematical community and, in particular, the Canadian Mathematical Society.
2011 Doctoral Prize Winner (Sep 19)

First Mathematical Congress of the Americas (Aug 29)

Mariya Sardarli awarded the Sun Life Financial Cup (Aug 2)
The Canadian Mathematical Society and Sun Life Financial jointly presented Mariya Sardarli with the Sun Life Financial Cup at the CMS Summer Meeting in Edmonton, Alberta. The award recognizes the first prize standing in the Sun Life Financial Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO), Canada's premier national mathematics competition for high school students.

Each member of Math Team Canada 2011 won a medal after competing with over 570 students at the 52nd International Mathematical Olympiad.
Prime Minister Helps Launch Math Team Canada 2011 (Jul 7)
Math Team Canada 2011 has started an intensive training program at the Banff International Research Station (BIRS) in order to prepare for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, helped launch Math Team Canada with congratulations sent to each student.

Math Team Canada selected for IMO (May 31)
The Canadian Mathematical Society has chosen six of Canada's best high school mathematics students to represent their country at the 2011 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The IMO is the student world championship of mathematics and will be held in Amsterdam from July 16-24.

David Peterson awarded CMS Student Committee Scholarship (May 17)
The CMS Student Committee Scholarship for CUMC 2011 has been awarded to David Peterson (UNBC). The award consists of a $500 prize and the opportunity to give a presentation at CUMC 2011. The CMS Student Committee was formed in 1999 to help the CMS serve the need of students.

The CMS will hold the 2011 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. in the Atrium of the CCIS Building, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta.
CMS to 'Talk the Talk' at CUMC 2011 (May 12)
A CMS talk on 'How to Give a Talk' will be presented by a number of Université Laval professors at the Canadian Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (CUMC) 2011 being held at Laval University from June 15-19. The CUMC is Canada's premier conference for undergraduate students interested in mathematics and is supported by the CMS.
CMS Supports Student-Organized Ottawa Math Conference (May 10)
A new CMS program to support student-organized events will provide funding support to the May 13-14 OMC at the University of Ottawa. This event is a student-organized conference whose purpose is to provide a venue for area graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and undergraduate students to showcase their original research.
CMS Honours Kangaroo Competition Champs (May 9)
The CMS and the Canadian Math Kangaroo Contest presented achievement certificates to 85 Ottawa students from grades 3 to 11 at a May 6 ceremony.
Science Rendezvous (May 6)
On Saturday, May 7, 2011, the Fields Institute in partnership with the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto, will be taking part in Science Rendezvous, a nation-wide science event that aims to bring science and its practitioners face-to-face with the community.
NSERC President to Address CMS Members (May 6)
Suzanne Fortier, the President of NSERC, will present 'NSERC and the Canadian Mathematics Community' on Friday, June 3 at 9:15 a.m. as part of the 2011 CMS Summer Meeting in Edmonton. In addition, there will also be a 'NSERC Research Funding' presentation on Saturday, June 4 at 1:30 p.m.  Meeting registration is available on-site or on-line.

CMS Issues 2010 Endowment Grants (Feb 3)
The CMS is pleased to announce the results of the 2010 Endowment Grants Competition. The Endowment Grants fund projects that contribute to the broader good of the Canadian mathematical community.
Mathematics Congress of the Americas (Jan 27)
At a meeting during the recent joint AMS/MAA meeting in New Orleans, the CMS joined with the American, Brazilian, and Mexican societies, along with UMALCA to establish an interim council to develop a North and South American mathematics Congress of the Americas expected to take place in 2013. Canada was well represented at the meeting with Christiane Rousseau (CRM), Edward Bierstone (Fields), Alejandro Adem (PIMS), and Johan Rudnick (CMS) in attendance. "This remarkable initiative was strongly endorsed and the CMS is honoured to have been invited to be part of the group that will actually make it happen" noted Jacques Hurtubise, CMS President. Alejandro Adem (PIMS) will represent the CMS on the council at the follow-up meeting expected to be in Rio in May.

Google donates 1 million euros to the IMO (Jan 20)
Google has given the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) organization one million euros to support the next five IMOs (2011-2015). The IMO is the world championship mathematics competition for high school students.
AARMS Summer School 2011 (Jan 15)
The tenth annual Summer School sponsored by the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS) will take place at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, during June 2-29, 2011. The school, which offers courses in the mathematical sciences and their applications, is intended for graduate students from all parts of the world.
