AARMS-CMS Student Poster Session

Students are encouraged to present a poster with a topic of their choice on Saturday December 7 and Sunday December 8. To register for the poster session, the abstract has to be submitted and registration has to be paid by November 15.

Setup will take place on Friday December 6th, starting at 3:00 pm, or on Saturday December 7th before 8:00 am. Presenters are asked to give a short (~3min) presentation on Sunday December 8th to the judges and remain at their posters during judging to answer questions. The winners will be announced following the judging time period. Prizes are awarded at the banquet on December 8 to the three best poster presenters, based on content, organization, and presentation. Each winner will receive two complimentary tickets to the banquet, a Maplesoft 'Maple 17' software package, as well as $100 and a framed award certificate.

CMS and Studc have acquired a one-time subsidy fund and are happy to reimburse each poster participant $50 to go towards poster printing costs. This fund is limited to 40 posters and will be distributed on the first-come first-serve basis, so do not delay and register for the session right now.

STUDC is organizing two student workshops on Friday, Dec 6th. The first session would be on Intermediate/Advanced LaTeX run by Aaron Berk on Friday from 11:30-12:30pm followed by a break. The next session will be Academic CV Writing by Amanda Malloch from 1-2:30 pm.

The workshop is designed to help participants improve the quality and readability of their LaTeX documents. Topics will include advanced mathematical formating, the (better) use of equations, environments and packages, referencing and indexing, the mathtools and tikZ packages. Attendees should be familiar with basic LaTeX (for example, be capable of typesetting an assignment, article or small set of notes).

CV Writing Workshop

Hands-on workshop consisting of a short presentation, followed by a discussion and peer-review of CVs. Participants are encouraged to submit their CVs ahead of time to help the workshop coordinators zero-in on common problem areas and to get better constructive feedback (do not fear, your anonymity shall be preserved).

Student Travel Support

With the support of CRM, the Fields Institute, PIMS and the University of Lethbridge (Jiping [Jim] Liu Memorial Travel Fund), grants are available to partially fund the travel and accommodation costs for bona fide graduate students at a Canadian or other university. Preference is given to Canadian students. To apply for this funding, applicants should ask their supervisor or departmental graduate advisor to complete the online application form no later than September 16.

Applicants will be notified early in October of the funding decision. If successful, the student will receive a cheque for reimbursement of expenses after the meeting and upon completion and submission of the standard Travel Expense Claim Form, along with appropriate original receipts.

For more information, please contact the Meeting Committee.

Application Form - Please click here to access the online application. All those who submitted applications will hear from the Canadian Mathematical Society in early October.
