I will talk about the undergraduate math curriculum, particularly in the first year, but I believe that there are strong echoes of my ideas in senior high school.
My thesis is that we should not be teaching calculus and linear algebra in first year, rather we should be using those (wonderful) subjects to teach our students what they really want and need (knowledge and skills). That might strike you as a simple change of emphasis, but the more that I have experimented with this, the more I see and try out in my own teaching, the more profound and critical the difference becomes. This is not only a change in pedagogy, it is a change in curriculum. I will talk for some 20 minutes about the experiences that have led me to this conclusion, and what it implies, and will give some examples.
