The 2018 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge — Nov 8/9

Share:

The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada's premier national mathematics competition that is open to any student with an interest in and grasp of high school math. The purpose of the COMC is to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics and problem solving. The competition serves to provide teachers with a unique student enrichment activity during the fall term.

Approximately the top 50 students from the COMC will be invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). Students who excel in the CMO will have the opportunity to be selected as part of Math Team Canada -- a small team of students who travel to compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Depending on grade level and performance, students participating in the COMC can also have opportunities to garner awards, to win prizes, to be considered for scholarships, and to get invited to camps.

Thank you for participating in the 2018 COMC!

The 2018 exam paper (PDF) is available for download.

Next Year's Date:

The 2019 COMC will be held on Thursday, November 7th in Canada and the Americas (anywhere in North/South American time zones), and on Friday, November 8th elsewhere in the world.

COMC 2018 Competition:

This year's competition is officially complete. Thank you to all our students, teachers, volunteers at our partner universities and to our sponsors!

Final scores have been released to teachers. Teachers can log into their school accounts in order to see their students' official results, including awards. They can also download or print their students' certificates.

The 2018 version of the COMC contained a high degree of difficulty. Many students had an understanding of the problems and made great progress. This in itself is very positive, even if a full solution was not reached. We applaud all students who challenged themselves and wrote the COMC. To provide a complete picture of grades and give students a greater understanding of where they stand, we have provided percentile rankings so students can gauge their performance on this difficult problem set. This year, the quartiles divided at the scores 15, 23.5, and 33 points out of 80.

The award winners have been announced for all categories and regions.

The random prize draw winners have been announced.

Teachers can log in to their school accounts at any time.
