Éducation mathématique
Org: Peter Taylor (Queen's University)
I will talk about the undergraduate math curriculum, particularly in the first year, but I believe that there are strong echoes of my ideas in senior high school.

My thesis is that we should not be teaching calculus and linear algebra in first year, rather we should be using those (wonderful) subjects to teach our students what they really want and need (knowledge and skills). That might strike you as a simple change of emphasis, but the more that I have experimented with this, the more I see and try out in my own teaching, the more profound and critical the difference becomes. This is not only a change in pedagogy, it is a change in curriculum. I will talk for some 20 minutes about the experiences that have led me to this conclusion, and what it implies, and will give some examples. I welcome others to come and participate actively in the following discussion. For students and teachers I can offer some support towards registration and travel. Email me at peter.taylor@queensu.ca.

Représentations d'algèbres
Org: Ragnar-Olaf Buchweitz (Toronto), Vlastimil Dlab (Carleton) et Shiping Liu (Sherbrooke)
The representation theory of finite dimensional algebras has been one of the most active areas of research in algebra interacting with other branches of mathematics such as Lie theory, group theory and algebraic theory.

The purpose of this Scientific Session is to bring together specialists and students in these research areas to exchange their results and ideas on topics including homological conjectures, derived categories, covering theory, geometrical characterizations of the representation type of algebras, cluster categories and alike.

We expect about 15 speakers from Canada, USA, Mexico and possibly Brazil and Europe.
