The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Ottawa invites applications to fill one tenure-track position in Pure Mathematics, specializing in Data Science, at the Assistant professor level, starting July 1, 2015.

Big Data is the top priority of the current information industry. Mikhail Gromov foresaw this, and recommended: "We shall need the creation of a new breed of mathematical professionals able to mediate between pure mathematics and applied science."

The successful candidate will strengthen the nascent Data Science group of the department. The research done by this group follows a pioneering and ingenious route using algorithms for data analysis based on new principles coming from pure mathematics. We keep in mind the words of Seymour Cray, the creator of supercomputers: "Never do what other people are doing." This approach earned our Data Science group first place in the 2013 International Cybersecurity Datamining Competition.

We seek a candidate with a solid background in pure mathematics, as well as a proven interest in machine learning, data mining, and data programming. In addition, the candidate must have a proven track-record in research, the ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and the desire and ability to supervise graduate students. English-French bilingualism is an asset. The conditions of employment are set by a collective agreement.

Applicants are requested to include a cover letter describing how they view their research in relation to Data Science. Le groupe résout des problèmes de classification en utilisant une voie originale et ingénieuse basée sur des outils tirés des mathématiques pures. En effet, au sein du groupe, on garde en tête la citation de Seymour Cray, père des super-ordinateurs: "Ne faites jamais la même chose que les autres". Cette nouvelle approche a permis au Data Science group de gagner la International Cybersecurity Datamining Competition 2013.

Nous recherchons des candidats avec un fort potentiel de recherche, démontré par leurs publications, la capacité d'enseigner aux premier et deuxième cycles et d'encadrer des étudiants aux cycles supérieurs. Le bilinguisme anglais-français est un atout. Les conditions d'emploi sont fixées par une convention collective.
