Education Plenary

DR. LYNDA COLGAN, Queen's University
(Mathematics) Education: the real and destructive consequences of its unshakable status as a low-status academic domain  [PDF]

Perceptions that 'teacher's college' is lightweight come from historical, structural, and cultural reasons - many of which are about how the field (specifically mathematics education) is assigned/structured and underrecognized by post-secondary administrators, faculty, pre- and in-service teachers, politicians and the public. This education plenary lecture will take delegates at the Canadian Mathematics Society meeting through a "day in the life" of a mathematics educator tasked with preparing pre-service teachers for the K-Grade 8 classroom. Experience the view from both sides of the lecture hall to see first-hand why radical change is needed if Canada is to produce the specialized mathematics teachers that children need and deserve.
