CMS Town Hall Meeting
Sunday, December 11, 12:30 - 2:00 pm

The CMS Executive is inviting all CMS members and meeting participants to join them at an informal luncheon to learn what CMS has planned for 2012 and to discuss any interests or concerns that members of our community may have. Unlike the AGM that focuses on what was achieved last year, this meeting focuses on what lies ahead. There will be a short presentation followed by questions and answers. This is an opportunity for participants to get together with the CMS Executive and discuss emerging issues as well as directly voice their opinions, concerns and interests.

Introductory Mini-course in Mathematical Finance for students
13:00-16:00, December 9, Delta Chelsea (Rossetti A)
The objective of the course is to give students a broad overview of the relationship between current financial sector issues and Mathematics and quantitative thinking. The format will be a three-hour course that will focus on six areas of interest, as listed below. Each part will start with a business case, leading to a discussion of the Mathematics of relevance, and will conclude with a summary of the mathematics that have been developed to address those issues, without getting into those Mathematics in depth.

Topics to be developed:

  • Investment decisions. 30 min. Why are investments made? How do investors evaluate an investment decision?
  • Portfolio theory. 30 min. Is there a science behind portfolio construction?
  • Financial derivatives. 30 min. What are they? Why do they exist?
  • Asset pricing. 30 min. Financial trading versus gambling. Two different worlds.
  • Market risk. 30 min. Returns can only be obtained by taking risks; how are those risks managed?
  • Credit risk. 30 min. Matrix algebra and the financial crisis in Greece.
