Assessment in Mathematics

ABSTRACT

This session will provide an opportunity for instructors to share such pedagogical knowledge as their innovative and meaningful approaches to assessment and the outcomes of these approaches, especially in the age of ease of access to both pedagogical resources and assignment solutions online. Through discussions at the last CMS Summer meeting, it was discovered that many undergraduate mathematics instructors struggle with assigning meaningful assessment, given that extensive introductory level proofs, solution manuals and solutions are easily available online. We hope that a session focusing on this topic will increase mathematics instructors’ assessment toolkit and to open a needed discussion about this critically important part of every mathematics course.

Indigenization and Reconciliation in Mathematics

ABSTRACT

In addition to the widespread interest in indigenization at Canadian universities, many universities also seek to address those Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that pertain to education and de-colonialization. These interests and desires extend to other organizations, including scientific organizations such as the Canadian Mathematical Society.

Our focus will be on hearing from experts and individuals experienced with indigenization/reconciliation in the university contexts of teaching and research.
