ALL MEMBERS OF MATH TEAM CANADA WIN MEDALS AT THE 2019 IMO

OTTAWA, Ontario — Math Team Canada 2019 returns from the 60^th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Bath, England with one Gold medal, one Silver medal and four Bronze medals. The six team members competed separately, answering six grueling questions in a competition lasting two days, four and a half hours each day. More than 600 high school students competed at the 2019 IMO.

Math Team Canada placed 24^th out of 112 countries. The Chair of IMO committee, Jacob Tsimerman says he is “incredibly proud of our team’s brilliant performance.” Tsimerman added: “The IMO is the apex of competitive mathematics at the high school level, and our students have represented our country incredibly well.”

The IMO Team Leader, Matthew Brennan also rejoiced at the results:

“We have had the pleasure of seeing many of these students grow as problem-solvers over a number of years. At this IMO, their growth was awarded — earning them a gold, a silver and four bronze medals. These amazing results are a testament to their abilities and hard work. As many in this talented group go to university next year, we look forward to seeing what further accomplishments await them.”

	Sebastian Jeon [New Jersey], Bergen County Academies, Hackensack, NJ, USA – Bronze medal
	William Zhao [Richmond Hill], Richmond Hill High School, Richmond Hill, ON – Bronze medal

The team trained at the University of Waterloo for two weeks prior to leaving for the IMO in the United Kingdom.

The 61^st International Mathematical Olympiad will take place next year in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world championship high school mathematics competition. The IMO began in 1959 in Romania with seven participating countries. Math Team Canada expects to compete against the world’s best students from over 100 countries in the 61st IMO.
