Top Canadian Mathematics Students Conquer the 51st Canadian Mathematical Olympiad

The Canadian Mathematical Society is pleased to announce the results of the 51st Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO), Canada’s premier mathematics competition which was written by nearly 90 students from more than 50 different schools on March 27, 2019.

The students were selected based on their performance on the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (written November 8 and 9, 2018) and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Qualifying Repêchage (written February 13 - 20, 2019), competitions which are supported by Premier Sponsors the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Society of Actuaries.

Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Committee Chair Professor Neal Madras offered his congratulations to the top competitors for their excellent achievements, and also to all participants who have competed for the excitement of doing challenging mathematics. He added:

“Succeeding at the CMO requires creativity and resourcefulness as well as the ability to construct and communicate a complex logical argument in a short amount of time."

The competition’s FIRST PRIZE and CMO Cup goes to William Zhao, a grade 12 student from Richmond Hill High School. Zhao says that he enjoyed solving this year’s problems. The competition included problems that were “short and elegant requiring original ideas instead of standard techniques or difficult explanations.”

Second Prize – Victor Rong (Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute), Toronto, ON;
Third Prize – Howard Halim (University of Toronto Schools), Toronto, ON.

Honourable Mentions:

Michael Li (Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute), Toronto, ON;
Zhening Li (Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School), Waterloo, ON;
Eric Shen (University of Toronto Schools), Toronto, ON;
Edgar Wang (Marianopolis College), Westmount, QC;
Scott Xu (Hon. Vincent Massey Secondary School), Windsor, ON.

International Division:

Thomas Guo (Phillips Exeter Academy), Exeter, NH;
Sebastien Jeon (Bergen County Academics), Hackensack, NJ;
Freddie Zhao (ICAE), Troy, MI.

The Society would like to acknowledge the Premier Sponsors as well as other corporate, government, and academic partners.
