ALL MEMBERS OF MATH TEAM CANADA MEDAL AT THE 2018 IMO

Math Team Canada 2018

OTTAWA, Ontario — Math Team Canada 2018 returns from the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Cluj, Romania with five Silver medals and one Bronze medal. The six team members competed separately, answering six grueling questions in a competition lasting two days, four and a half hours each day. More than 600 high school students wrote the 2018 IMO.

Math Team Canada placed 16th out of 107 countries. Team leader James Rickards is proud of Math Team Canada 2018 saying the team’s hard work has paid off.

“Canada had an excellent showing at the 2018 IMO in Romania, with the students earning 5 silver medals and one bronze medal. Their results are a testament to the hard work they have put in training for the contest."

The team results are as follows:

Thomas Guo - Phillips Exeter Academy, NH, USA - Silver Medalist
Howard Halim - University of Toronto Schools, Toronto, ON - Silver Medalist
Victor Rong - Marc Garneau C. I., Toronto, ON - Silver Medalist
Nicholas Sun - North Central Collegeiate, Napierville, IL, USA - Silver Medalist
William Zhao - Richmond Hill High School, Richmond Hill, ON - Silver Medalist
Zixiang Zhou - University Heights Public School, London, ON - Bronze Medalist

The team trained at the Banff International Research Station for two weeks prior to leaving for the IMO in Romania.

The 60th International Mathematical Olympiad will take place next year in Bath, UK.

About the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world championship high school mathematics competition. The IMO began in 1959 in Romania with seven participating countries. Math Team Canada expects to compete against the world’s best students from over 100 countries in the 60th IMO. Canada has earned 31 gold, 49 silver and 85 bronze medals since first competing in 1981.
