Canadian Mathematical Society Celebrates a First for Canada

OTTAWA, Ontario — The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce the members of Canada’s first-ever team to compete in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), in Florence, Italy, April 9-15, 2018. EGMO Math Team Canada is:

  • Anna Krokhine - [Toronto, ON]
  • Jingzhi Liang - [North York, ON]
  • Elnaz Hessami Pilehrood - [North York, ON]
  • Karen Situ - [Vancouver, BC]

The team is led by CMS Mathematical Competitions Chair, Professor Dorette Pronk (Dalhousie) and Deputy Leader Sarah Sun (TD Bank) who served as Deputy Leader for Math Team Canada 2017 in Rio de Janeiro.

Each student competes individually to solve six questions, in a competition lasting two days, four and a half hours each day. The students were chosen largely based on the results of the 2017 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge written in November.

Team Leader Dorette Pronk is delighted that Canada is participating at the 2018 EGMO.

“Girls across the country will be encouraged to develop their mathematical abilities and problem solving skills: Our participation in the EGMO shows that we expect that they will shine in an international contest of the highest calibre.”

Pronk is excited at their prospects.

“I am excited about their commitment to train their problem solving skills and learn new techniques in preparation for a significant challenge and a unique opportunity to connect with other girls who are passionate about and excel in mathematics. Our female mathletes are doing all they can to be ready!”

Sponsors of the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)

The Canadian Mathematical Society is very grateful for the significant support received from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo that enabled the Society to send a Canadian team to this year’s EGMO.

About the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)

The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is an international mathematics competition similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days. Participating countries send teams consisting of four female mathematicians of school age. The EGMO was first held in 2012 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The 2019 EGMO will be held in Ukraine.
