Top Talent Emerges from the 50th Canadian Mathematical Olympiad

The Canadian Mathematical Society is pleased to announce the results of the 50th Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO), Canada’s premier mathematics competition which was written by nearly 90 students from more than 50 different schools on March 28, 2018.

The students were select based largely on their performance on the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (written November 2 and 3, 2017) and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Qualifying Repêchage (written January 29, 2018), competitions supported by Premier Sponsors the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Society of Actuaries.

Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Committee Chair Professor Neal Madras (York), said competing and excelling at the CMO is a great accomplishment.

“The students who succeed on the CMO have accomplished something remarkable. They display impressive mathematical ability and insight. A hard Olympiad problem is a challenge even for most math professors."

The competition’s FIRST PRIZE and CMO Cup goes to Victor Rong, a 16 year- old grade 11 student from Toronto’s Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute. Rong says this year’s competition varied from last year’s and he credits his success to a great deal of preparation.

“The problems could be solved with simple techniques used cleverly, a common trait of excellent problems… Compared to last year's set…this year’s followed a reasonable progression of difficulty. I'm thrilled to have come first in this challenging competition.”

Second Prize – Howard Halim (University of Toronto Schools), Toronto;
Third Prize – William Zhao (Richmond Hill High School), Richmond Hill.

Honourable Mentions:

Steven Chow (Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute), Scarborough;
Andrew Dong (Centennial Collegiate & Vocational Institute), Guelph;
