Philippe Gille receives the 2015 G. de B. Robinson Award

OTTAWA — Philippe Gille is the recipient of the 2015 G. de B. Robinson Award for his paper Octonion algebras over rings are not determined by their norms (Canad. Math. Bull. Vol. 57 (2), 2014 pp. 303–309). The award is given out to recognize outstanding contributions to the Canadian Journal of Mathematics (CJM) or the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin (CMB). Gille’s paper is an example of how powerful abstract techniques in one area of mathematics can be used to decisively settle long-standing problems in another area.

“The counterexample obtained with the powerful methods of this paper provides a definite advance in this important part of algebra,” said Karl Dilcher, Chair of the CMS Publications Committee.

In 1994 Gille completed his PhD at Université Paris-Sud XI - Orsay under the supervision of Jean-Louis Colliot-Thélène. Gille has worked at the École normale supérieure in Paris as a senior researcher and at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). He is currently the research director at the Institut Camille Jordan (Université Claude Bernard) in Lyon, France.

Gille has published more than 40 research papers and co-authored the book Central simple algebras and Galois cohomology with Tamás Szamuely. He has also been involved in organizing several scientific events including the summer school Introduction to group schemes in Luminy, France, a special day in the memory of François Bruhat, and a session at the Second Canada-France Congress in Montreal, among others.

The G. de B. Robinson Award will be presented at the CMS Winter Meeting in Montreal, December 4 to 7.

The G. de B. Robinson Award is named for Gilbert de Beauregard Robinson, the third president of the CMS. Robinson, along with H.S.M. Coxeter, established the Canadian Journal of Mathematics (CJM) and acted as the managing editor for 30 years.
