Math Team Canada 2013 Wins Olympiad Gold, Silver and Bronze
Canadian high school team turns in world class performance

BACKGROUND
The The International Mathematical Olympiad is the world championship high school mathematics competition. The 2013 IMO contest was set by an international jury of mathematicians and was written on July 23 and 24. On each day of the contest, three questions had to be solved within a time limit of four and a half hours.
Although students compete individually, country rankings are obtained by adding the team scores. The maximum score for each student is 42 and for a team of six students the maximum is 252. The Canadian team placed 11th out of 97 competing countries with an overall score of 163. The 2013 results bring Canada’s total medal count since 1981 to 25 gold, 46 silver, and 76 bronze.
The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is responsible for the selection, training and overall support of Math Team Canada to the IMO.

Math Team Canada members received their medals at the IMO closing ceremony held on Saturday, July 27. Calvin Deng and Zhuo Qun (Alex) Song were both awarded gold medals, John (Zhiyao) Ma and Daniel Spivak were awarded silver medals and Alexander Whatley and Kevin Sun were awarded bronze medals.
As a result of the medals awarded to the team, Math Team Canada was ranked 11th in the world out of 97 participating countries. Additionally, Calvin Deng’s gold medal earned him a world ranking of 8th place and Zhuo Qun (Alex) Song’s medal earned him a 10th place world ranking.
“Canada has been participating at the IMO since 1981 and has consistently performed well on the international stage,” said Keith Taylor, President of the Canadian Mathematical Society. “The team’s 11th place ranking is an outstanding accomplishment for which the students and the Canadian mathematical community at large should be extremely proud.”
“These young people have indeed risen to the challenge, showing astounding mathematical skill and all winning medals,” said Robert Morewood, Deputy Leader of Math Team Canada 2013 and Chair of the CMS IMO Committee. “They have also represented Canada well to all the other youngsters here from around the world, making many connections, some of which may lead to life-long international friendships.”
