Canadian Mathematical Society with Nelson, Brooks/Cole
Partner to Sponsor Excellence in Teaching Award

Any full-time university, college, two-year college, or CEGEP teachers in Canada with at least five years teaching experience at their current institution can be nominated. Nominees will be judged on the merits of their ability to develop innovative course materials (methods of delivery, authored textbooks, online materials, and journal articles on teaching) as well as their influence on students and other teachers.

"At CMS we know that excellence in research and development of innovators who will contribute to the scientific development in mathematics and across disciplines starts with excellence in education. The CMS Excellence in Teaching Award will focus on the recipientÂ’s merit as a teacher as exemplified by exceptional performance in the classroom, as well as commitment and dedication to teaching and to students," according to Christiane Rousseau, president of the CMS.

Nelson and Brooks/Cole have each contributed $10,000 to create the award. Recipients will receive a $2,500 cash award, a framed certificate, two-year complimentary membership in the CMS, and travel costs to receive the award.

"As a leading publisher of learning materials for Canadian classrooms we feel it is important to foster relationships with organizations such as the CMS in order to give back to the discipline," says George Bergquist, president of Nelson. "By providing support for a teaching award such as this, we are furthering the advancement and development of undergraduate education throughout Canada.
