"To be an olympiad winner is an outstanding achievement" said Dr. Daryl Tingley, University of New Brunswick at Fredericton, and Chair of the CMS CMO Committee. "A real benefit of contests like the CMO is the motivation it gives students to explore areas not encountered in the standard school curriculum. It also helps students gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the role of Mathematics in the workplace."

1998 Prize Winners: The top winners in the 30th Canadian Mathematical Olympiad are:

First Prize and the Sun Life Cup goes to Adrian Chan, Upper Canada College, Toronto, Ontario. Second Prize goes to Adrian Birka, Lakeshore Catholic High School, Port Colborne, Ontario. Third Prize goes to Jimmy Chui, Earl Haig Secondary School, North York, Ontario. Honourable Mentions were awarded to Fahim Ahmad, The Woodlands Secondary School, Mississauga, Ontario; David Arthur, Upper Canada College, Toronto, Ontario; Keon Choi, A.Y. Jackson Secondary School, North York, Ontario; Chen He, Columbia International College, Hamilton, Ontario; Xin Huang, Central Peel Secondary School, Brampton, Ontario; Yin Lei, Vincent Massey Secondary School, Windsor, Ontario; Zion Kwok, Eric Hamber Secondary School, Vancouver, B.C.; Adrian Tang, Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute, Scarborough, Ontario; Dale Whitmore, Prince of Wales Collegiate, St. John's, Newfoundland.

Fifty-five students from Trinidad and Tobago also wrote the 1997 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge and one was invited to write the 1998 CMO.

The Awards will be presented at the CMO Prize Winners Banquet which will take place at the University of Waterloo on Tuesday, June 16, 1998 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

They have shown the creative and critical problem solving skills that are so essential in today's highly competitive global economy" said Dr. Graham Wright, Executive Director, Canadian Mathematical Society. "The Canadian Mathematical Society was delighted to assist colleagues in Trinidad and Tobago so that some of their students could participate in the Society's competitions programme".
