29th CANADIAN MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD WINNERS

OTTAWA, Ontario -- Twelve Canadian students receive top honours in the 29th Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). The CMO, Canada's premier mathematics competition, is organized and administered by the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). 79 students representing 56 schools were invited to write the 1997 CMO based upon their performance in the 1996 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) (November 27, 1996), the CMS Correspondence Training Programme and other mathematics competitions. Students tackled five questions during the three hour examination held on March 26, 1997.

"To be an olympiad winner is an outstanding achievement" said Dr. Daryl Tingley, University of New Brunswick at Fredericton, and Chair of the CMS CMO Committee. "A real benefit of contests like the CMO is the motivation it gives students to explore areas not encountered in the standard school curriculum. It also helps students gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the role of Mathematics in the workplace."

1997 Prize Winners: The top winners in the 29th Canadian Mathematical Olympiad are:

First Prize and the Sun Life Cup goes to Sabin Cautis, Earl Haig Secondary School, North York, Ontario. Second Prize goes to Byung Kyu Chun, Harry Ainlay Composite High School, Edmonton, Alberta. Third Prize goes to Michaela Enchescu, Dawson College, Montreal, Quebec. Honourable Mentions were awarded to: Adrian Birka, Lakeshore Catholic High School, Port Colborne, Ontario; Adrian Chan, Upper Canada College, Toronto, Ontario; Jimmy Chui, Brebeuf College School, Willowdale, Ontario; Joel Kamnitzer, Earl Haig Secondary School, North York, Ontario; Deepee Khosla, Lisgar Collegiate Institute, Ottawa, Ontario; Michael Ludkovski, Richmond Secondary School, Richmond, B.C.; Colin Percival, Burnaby Central Secondary School, Burnaby, B.C.; David Pritchard, Woburn Collegiate Institute, Scarborough, Ontario; Yang Shen, Laurenhill Academy, St. Laurent, Quebec.

Four students from Trinidad and Tobago also wrote the 1996 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge and two of these were invited to write the 1997 CMO. William Blackwell, Presentation College, San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago received an Honourable Mention.

The Awards will be presented at the CMO Prize Winners Banquet which will take place at the University of Waterloo on Tuesday, June 17, 1997 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

"All of these winners have done extremely well in a most challenging competition. They have shown the critical and creative problem solving skills so essential in a highly competitive global economy" said Dr. Graham Wright, Executive Director, Canadian Mathematical Society. "The Canadian Mathematical Society was delighted to assist colleagues in Trinidad and Tobago so that some of their students could participate in the 1996 Open and the 1997 CMO".
