On behalf of the University of Toronto, the Department of Mathematics invites the mathematical community to the Winter 2006 Meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society.
Following the usual format of the CMS Meeting, the program will include a wide variety of sessions, a contributed paper session, plenary and prize lectures, and a public lecture.
All activities and scientific talks will be held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto, located at the intersection of Queen and York Street.

The panelists will be Professors and Postdoctoral fellows, who will give advice and answer student questions on a variety of topics. This presentation is predominantly geared towards high school, undergraduate and graduate students, but all meeting participants are welcome to attend.
Over 90 percent of all world trade is transported in marine cargo containers moving from port to port. Here in Canada, approximately 1.8 million marine containers arrive at our ports each year, and represent a significant portion of our economy.
While the grand majority of commercial shipments are perfectly legitimate, these marine containers are used by criminals and terrorists to transport drugs and weapons into Canada. In our post-9/11 world, we must be extremely careful to secure the global supply chain, and prevent contraband from entering our country. Many security experts predict that the next major terrorist attack will occur after a nuclear weapon is successfully smuggled in a marine container, and blown up on North American soil.
At the Canada Border Services Agency, we use an automated commercial risk-assessment system to identify and inspect the highest-risk containers. In this presentation, we discuss how mathematics is used to improve the effectiveness of CBSA's risk-scoring algorithm, to accurately identify the containers that pose a threat to our country. This is just one of the many examples where mathematics plays a critical role in improving Canada's economy and our national security.

Limited funds are available to partially fund the travel and accommodation costs for bona fide graduate students at a Canadian or other university. Preference is given to Canadian students. To apply for this funding, applicants should submit a letter written by their supervisor or departmental graduate advisor, providing the following: name of student, area of study and level, how the student will benefit from the meeting, whether or not the student be speaking, and what support is available from other sources.
This letter should be sent before October 15, 2006 to firstname.lastname@example.org. Applicants will be notified early in November of the funding decision.
If successful, the student will receive a cheque for reimbursement of expenses after the meeting and upon completion and submission of the standard Travel Expense Claim Form, along with appropriate original receipts.
