CMS Summer 1999 Scientific Report |
With over 260 registrations this year's CMS Summer Meeting was the largest ever. We were delighted to welcome so many mathematicians and friends to Newfoundland. The scientic sessions of the meeting were held on the campus of Memorial University.
The Jeffery-Williams Lecture was given by Professor John Friedlander (University of Toronto); he spoke on ``Prime values of polynomials''. Professor Nicole Tomczak-Jaegermann (University of Alberta) presented the Krieger-Nelson Lecture, speaking on ``Asymptotic aspects in geometric functional analysis''.
Ed Barbeau (University of Toronto) gave a well-attended Public Lecture on
``Delicious mathematics''.
The plenary speakers of this meeting were
* Ed Barbeau, University of Toronto (Men as trees walking)
* T. Ko"rner, Cambridge University (Does order matter?)
* R. Brylinski, Pennsylvania State University (Star products and quantization of manifolds with symmetry)
* L. Vinet, CRM and Unversite' de Montreal (Integrable systems, special functions, and algebraic combinations)
* M. van den Bergh, University of Limburg (Non-commutative algebraic geometry)
* D. Stinson, University of Waterloo (Orthogonal arrays: variations on a theme, and applcations).
* Harmonic Analysis (organized by K. Hare, University of Waterloo; joint CMS-CRM session): 15 speakers.
* Representation Theorie (organized by B. Broer, Universite' de Montreal; joint CMS-Fields Institute session): 16 speakers.

Strawbridge, Director of Faculty Relations; Dr. K. Keough, Vice-President (Research and International Relations); Dr. W. Davidson, the former Dean of Science; Dr. H.
