CMS SUMMER MEETING 1998
JUNE 13 - 15, 1998
UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK (SAINT JOHN)
SCIENTIFIC REPORT
The Spring Meeting of the CMS took place June 13-15, 1998. It was held in Saint John, New Brunswick and was hosted by the University of New Brunswick (Saint John). There were 214 participants registered, a large attendance at a CMS Summer Meeting.
The Krieger-Nelson Lecture was given by Catherine Sulem (University of Toronto): Non-linear Schrodinger equation and wave collapse. The Jeffery-Williams Lecture was given by George Elliott (University of Toronto): C*-algebras - the first 50 years. The public lecture was given by F. William Lawvere (University of Buffalo): Everyday physics of extended bodies or why functionals need analyzing.
The plenary speakers and their titles were:
Kenneth Davidson (Waterloo), Polynomially bounded operators Detlef Gromoll (SUNY Stony Brook), Metric foliations and non-negative curvature Erwin Lutwak (Polytechnic University, Brooklyn), The Minkowski problem after 100 years-lots of new questions Stephen Schanuel (SUNY Buffalo), Objective number theory
The meeting had six Research Symposia:
Category Theory, org: Richard Wood (Dalhousie), 18 talks
Convex Geometry, org: A.C. Thompson (Dalhousie), 21 talks
Discrete Mathematics, org: Katherine Heinrich and Brian Alspach (SFU)
& Abraham Punnen (UNBSJ), 12 talks
Low Dimensional Topology, org: Jack Gegenberg (UNBF), 7 talks
Operator Theory [Also supported by the CRM], org: Heydar Radjavi,
(Dalhousie), 18 talks
Relativity and geometry [Also supported by the Fields Institute], org:
Jacques Hurtubise and Niky Kamran, 12 talks
The Education session had two themes: "Mathematicians teaching statistics" and "Reform Calculus". It was organized by Maureen Tingley and Barry Monson (UNB Fredericton). There were six speakers. The Graduate Seminar was especially active thanks to financial support from the CMS. It was organized by Jeff Phillips (UNBSJ) and there were 11 talks.
In total then there were over 110 presentations, including two excellent "self-suporting" sessions (Discrete Mathematics and Low-Dimensional Topology) resulting from a call by the Research Committee. Financial support for the sessions was provided by the CMS with additional grants from the Fields Institute and the CRM.
