A band is a semigroup of idempotents. A canonical form will be presented for principal-ideal bands of linear transformations acting on a finite-dimensional vector space over a general field. This canonical form will be brought to bear on the question of whether idempotents of all possible ranks are present in maximal principal-ideal bands.
