CHAIR OF PURE MATHEMATICS

The Department of Pure Mathematics at the University of Waterloo invites applications for the position of Department Chair. This position comes with a tenured Associate or Full Professorship, depending on qualifications. The successful candidate will be internationally recognized as a distinguished researcher in pure mathematics and will have demonstrated leadership abilities.

The University of Waterloo is located in the heart of Waterloo Region, known as Canada's Technology Triangle, which is one of the fastest developing regions in Canada. The University of Waterloo has become one of Canada's leading comprehensive universities with more than 30,000 full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students, and is proud to maintain the largest co-operative education program in the world. Canada's national magazine Maclean's has ranked the University of Waterloo as the most innovative university in Canada for nineteen consecutive years and recently placed the University of Waterloo at the top of the "most likely to produce leaders of tomorrow" and "best overall" categories.

The Department of Pure Mathematics is one of five academic units within the Faculty of Mathematics, the first such faculty in North America. The Faculty has over 4500 undergraduates, 400 graduate students, 185 full-time faculty, and 90 staff. Since 1968, Putnam teams from the University of Waterloo rank number six in terms of top-five finishes, ahead of Berkeley, Cornell, Stanford, Duke, Chicago, Yale, and Columbia among others.

The Department of Pure Mathematics has 23 full-time faculty members and 2 cross-appointed faculty members. The research interests of the department include algebra and logic, geometry and topology, harmonic analysis, number theory, and operator algebras. Some of the department's faculty members also have ties with the nearby Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. The department has a substantial graduate program, currently with 34 graduate students pursuing Masters or PhD degrees. The undergraduate program in pure mathematics is well known for its rigour and the strong preparation it provides students continuing on to graduate programs in pure mathematics.

Candidates interested in this exciting leadership position should have a PhD in Pure Mathematics, a strong track record in research, demonstrated success in graduate student supervision, and evidence of effective leadership. The salary offered will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The closing date for applications is October 31, 2011, but suitable candidates will be invited for interviews while the position is advertised and an appointment may be made prior to the closing date.
