The University of Northern British Columbia, in conjunction with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Applied Mathematics. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019. The position requires a PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.

The successful candidate will teach a breadth of undergraduate and graduate level Mathematics courses with emphasis on courses required by the Civil and Environmental Engineering degrees. Candidates will present a record of teaching excellence at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates will also present evidence of a strong and promising research program. This can include a comprehensive research plan, research grants and scholarships received, articles published in highly rated journals, books published by respected presses, talks given at prominent academic conferences, research-related nominations and awards appropriate to stage of career. Additionally, the successful candidate will also be expected to effectively undertake service activities.

The UNBC Department of Mathematics and Statistics delivers courses to support a Major in Mathematics, Joint-Major in Mathematics with other Sciences, a Minor in Mathematics, and a Minor in Statistics as well as service teaching for other disciplines, including Civil and Environmental Engineering. An important feature of the Mathematics degree program is the early emphasis on the development of abstract reasoning and the relation of the abstract to the concrete. The degree requirements have been chosen so as to provide students with a broad background in mathematics and statistics while still leaving them room to pursue their individual interests. The Department works closely with the Academic Success Centre and students have the opportunity to lead tutorials, to tutor, and to develop teaching skills.
