Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Data Science
The University of Ottawa invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Data Science. Big Data Science competencies is now considered a "must have" and a top priority for all industry sectors – Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, Information Technology, Financial Services, Life Science, Retails and more.
The successful candidate will strengthen the newly created Data Science and Machine Learning Group part of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The research done by this group follows a pioneering and ingenious route using algorithms for data analysis based on new principles coming from pure mathematics. The successful candidate should not only be an excellent theoretician with a proven research track record, but should preferably have a proved record of successful applications of his/her algorithms to real data. The University of Ottawa is a research-intensive institution, and this position forms part of its strategic areas of development. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is a sponsor of the Fields Institute of Toronto, the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques of Montreal, the Canadian Institute for Statistical Sciences, and is part of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Mathematics and Statistics.
Tier 1 Chairs, tenable for seven years and renewable, are for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their field. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.
Required Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent in Mathematics, postdoctoral experience is mandatory, superior research achievements in the CRC's identified area(s) and proof of interdisciplinary collaborations, an exceptional profile with respect to teaching and training of students at graduate level, strong record of external research funding, excellent communication skills in either English or French. A passive knowledge of the other official language would be an asset.

Rank and salary: Regular tenure-track academic appointment in the Faculty of Science, with a salary consistent with the collective agreement of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa.
