How to enliven the mathematics classroom

I will offer suggestions for engaging students' attention in the mathematics classroom (at both high school and university) in such a way as to increase their understanding and make them more active learners. Some of the methods are well-known, some less well-known, and a few are idiosyncratic. In particular, I will discuss the use of technology, applications, contests, and history.
