Varieties of groups and group representations

The title of my talk refers to the so-called Finite Basis Problem for the varieties of groups and group representations. A brief introduction to the problem will be followed by some recent developments in the area. The discussion will include, among other things, a recent construction of a free group G of a variety such that G satisfies the maximal condition on its verbal subgroups whereas its group algebra KG (K, a field of characteristic 2) does not satisfy the maximal condition on its verbal ideals. This settles a problem raised by Plotkin and Vovsi (1983).
